| The North Idaho Centennial Trail Foundation is proud to announce the completion of two new sections of the North Idaho Centennial Trail System. In total, the North Idaho Centennial Trail System now stretches over 28 miles.
4.25 miles of new asphalt runs from Riverstone to Heutter Road. The first section, considered the new north/south arterial of the North Idaho
Centennial Trail, follows the old Union Pacific Railroad connecting the existing trail at Beebe Boulevard in Riverstone to the original trail at the Seltice Way/ I-90 Bridges. The second addition, The Prairie Trail, continues northwest from the Seltice Way/ I-90 Bridges to Huetter Rd on the rail line.
Currently, the Prairie Trail connects over 6 neighborhoods and 6 schools within the vicinity. The new sections of trail are 16' wide, 4 wider than the Centennial Trail. The wider path will greatly increase visitor capacity that is predicted due to the easy accessibility to the trail. We envision the community using it seven days a week; five days commuting and the weekends recreating. Over the next month crews will install traffic control lights at the trail intersections on Kathleen Ave. and Atlas Rd.
The project's approximate cost is $400,000 and was made possible through the sale of utility easements within the rail corridor to nearby developments.
The North Idaho Centennial Trail Foundation was established in 1989 as a non-profit organization to oversee the maintenance, stewardship and continued improvements of the trail. In addition, the Foundation’s efforts are directed to promoting, recommending, and assisting with the standardization of trail designs and construction in Kootenai County. |
